I-9 Verification

In today’s gig economy, more and more employers are hiring remote workers. Some employers never meet their remote employees face-to-face. This can present a problem. Why is that? The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires all US employers to complete Federal Form I-9 for each new employee and to keep it on file for at least three years after the employee terminates. This form is used to document the employee’s identity and authorization to work in the United States and requires the employer, or its agent, to meet the new employee face-to-face and physically view his or her original identification and work authorization documents. Steep penalties can be assessed against employers who fail to properly complete and maintain Form I-9, as well as for hiring unauthorized workers. How do remote employers handle this situation? Many engage the services of a notary public to act as the employer’s agent for this purpose. We can arrange to meet with your remote employees, view their documents and complete the I-9 as the employer’s agent. This is not a notarial act and our notaries do not notarize the signatures on the I-9 form. We simply act as the employer’s agent for the purposes of documenting the employee’s identify and work authorization status.
